One of my dearest girlfriends recently found herself in the difficult position of having to call off a wedding. Yea, she stamped that guy out.
I was the provisor of information that led to her decision. Before I found myself sitting down with her for real talk in my living room on a Wednesday night, it had seemed like this was the type of thing reserved for reality television. Or at least for people who live faster than I do. Not so. There are real people — people in my life — who walk around with these experiences under their belts.
Friendships break or grow under pressure. There is always the possibility of being neatly snipped out of the picture, especially when to matters of the heart. I am so thankful to still be able to have the candid conversations and hearty laughs of seasoned friendship.

Blackberry-Sumac Gin Fizz
*adapted from Bon Appetit
1/4 cup blackberries
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
1 heaping tablespoon of ground sumac berries
1/2 cup gin
mint leaves, rubbed
salt, to taste
Place water and sugar in a small saucepan. Dissolve sugar in water over medium heat. Stir in the sumac. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Strain the sumac syrup through a fine mesh sieve.
Add strained syrup and blackberries to a blender. Blend on high speed until mixture is finely pureed. Strain through a fine mesh sieve. Add gin, salt and rubbed mint leaves to the mixture. Divide evenly between two tall glasses. Add ice to glasses. Top off with club soda.
Makes 2 drinks.
